Hi everyone,

I recently discovered that my mother's maiden name, Monks, has a Coat of Arms. Obviously, C of A's were awarded to individuals and not names or families, but is there a way to find out who the Coat of Arms was granted to.

Also, my grandmother has a wooden plaque in her hallway with this exact Coat of Arms that I hadn't noticed before. She said she and my late Grandfather got it, "oh, over twenty years ago!"

Is it possible that we are entitled to a Coat of Arms granted to an ancestor?

Not 100% sure on this one Ryan, but I have found a link for you. May be a starting point?

H Ryan...heres one coat of arms but there could be many for such an old name as Monks...alot of wealthy families changed them over the generations to suit themselfs.

Hi Lee,

That's the one that is hanging in my Grandmother's hallway. You're right, Monks does appear to be a very old name, but not one that is particularly common I would have thought. Here's hoping it belongs to an ancestor :)
