Hello crankypants,
It is a bit confusing. There is this one:
Brisbane Courier - 19 Sep 1890 p.7
HAMILTON - McLUCKIE. - On the 9th September, at Wickham terrace Presbyterian Church, by the Rev. G.D. Buchanan, BA., William eldest son of William Hamilton of Cork, Ireland, to Jeanie second daughter of the late Alexander McLuckie of Castlecomer, Ireland.
and then there is a younger sister baptised Janet and this is her death:
# 1950/B28434 McLuckie Janet Alexander Ann Malcolm
She is the one listed as Jeanet in 1905, 1908 & 1913. She didn't marry so I expected to see her listed up to 1949.
I don't have another one in my tree and there is no birth to 1914 for another that I'm missing so it must be the same one and some error for still being on the roll in 1954 ??? Any occupation?
No McLUCKIE to be found in Qld. in NLA after 1939. - Damn.
Regards,
Dave
DaveHam9
9th June 2010, 05:04
Hello crankypants,
Well now. :D I'm really confused. I thought all the McLUCKIEs in Qld. were mine. :2fun:
Death: 1952/1827 Thomas McLuckie - David - Mary Millar
There is no David in my tree.
So Jeanie after 1913 is not mine so we don't have to explain the 1954 E/R. But, the one in my tree did die in Qld. in 1950, so he was not on the roll in later years.
Death 1924/1709 Mary Miller McLuckie - Thomas McLuckie Jeanie Harriott

Hello crankypants,
I can't see the marriage of Thomas or David in Qld. or NSW. I don't have a Thomas or a David anywhere in my tree. I'll have to search some more to rule them out. :) Oh, there is a John McLUCKIE with first spouse's mother's maiden name BUCHANAN. They lived with his future spouse and her mother's maiden name was also BUCHANAN. One of the children of the 2nd marriage ended up in NZ and one was a David, born 1860 Lanark. Nothing on that to say David left Scotland. I wonder if those two were 1/2 sisters to be living together with John. ??? We may have to return to Scotland to look at another part of the tree. :D

Hello crankypants,
The Argus (Melbourne, Vic.) - Monday 16 March 1857 p.4
DIED. On the 8th December, of cholera, at Doveton College, Calcutta, Mary, wife of Thomas McLuckie, Esq., and sister to Mr. John S. Miller, Scotch College, Eastern Hill.
That's the only McLUCKIE / MILLER marriage found so far.
David married Mary MILLAR / MILLER somewhere and they had a son Thomas who married Jeanie HARRIOTT somewhere. Sounds like progress. :D Very little progress actually. I can't find either marriage or any births for either couple in Qld. or NSW. And I can't find them in any tree.

A footnote:
1865 MCLUCKIE ELIZABETH KERR F BRIDGETON GLASGOW CITY/LANARK 644/03 1633
In Normanton John [LEDLIE] was employed by Burns, Philip & Co. In 1891 after a short term at the company’s branches in Thursday Island and Port Moresby, New Guinea he moved to Herberton where he joined the staff of Jack & Newell (established 1882). Also on the staff there were sisters Annie (from an Irish record “Go Lucky”) and Elizabeth Kerr (Bessie) McLuckie, both milliners.
Bessie married William Marnane in 1893 and they settled and developed “Coombra”, Atherton (12 miles from Herberton) – a farm and cattle property of a deep, rich, red volcanic soil, bounded on the eastern side by Mazlin Creek and on the western side by the Great Dividing Range.
Contrary to a statement in “History of Queensland, Its People and Industries – William Marnane, J.P.” to the effect that Bessie’s late father Alexander McLuckie was “an Irishman and a scion of an old County Kilkenny family” the McLuckies were in fact Scottish (staunch Presbyterians) from Rutherglen, Lanarkshire.

DEATHS
CATHERWOOD.-On the 2nd September, 1913, at London, Nelly Catherwood, nee Richardson, late of "Bidston," Eagle Junction, in her 28th year. Advised by cable.
Interesting name and age and quarter do not fit so it can't be the right one:
Deaths Jun 1913
Catherwood Ellen C 22 Croydon 2a 309
Richardson Elizabeth 78 Croydon 2a 309
Possibly coincidence there is a RICHARDSON there too.
I've searched Sep & Dec Q of 1913 for helen, nellie and nelly and can't find her death.
The William James in Victoria was in business/finance not an engineer so possibly Helen's spouse did not end up marrying in Victoria in 1914. eek) I think the one in Victoria was from Ireland.

They marry in 1912 in Qld. Helen dies in London in 1913. William marries in Victoria in 1914.
Death of the other one in the E/R

I presume he married Doreen in Victoria.
I noticed in the E/R Index as well as William James in Brisbane in 1913 three are two entries in 1913 Brisbane for a William CATHERWOOD. Nothing overlapping in the E/R so I suppose there is only one, or two although we have 3 marriages.

Hello crankypants,
Thanks.
I would say that the William James from Lancashire probably ended up in Australia because there are are several others in Australia born in Liverpool - father William John.
I keep finding more stuff on the one in Victoria. Not that it helps me much. :D
That's it I think for this topic.
Regards,
Dave

Hello crankypants,
England 1901
CATHERWOOD, William James 1890 11 M West Derby Lancashire
Ireland 1901
Catherwood William J 10 Male Son Presbyterian
I've seen one reference to the one in E/R in Victoria that he was born in Ireland and one that he was from Lancashire.
WWI enlistment for the one in Melbourne had born July 24, 1890 Belfast, Ireland.
I looked in freeBMD for the death after 1913 of a William James CATHERWOOD and I tried to search the other index but was having trouble with the site.
Did you look but not find a death in England?

Dave

Hello crankypants,
Thank you very much.
There are TWO, mine born about 1886 (the age 27 on the shipping record in 1913 should be accurate - no reason to over- or under-state his age) and the other born about 1890 and both ended up in Australia.
Age at death (estimated): 76
Does that mean someone guessed or it is calculated from some other record? If accurate it does not fit the one born Ireland in 1890. Place of death fits the one in 1901 census Lancashire who was born 1890. So if the Victorian one was born in Ireland and mine born in Lancashire then the age in the 1901 census is out or the age in 1913 is out by 4 years, or we have THREE. Meaning mine is not in the 1901 census and the one born Ireland ended up in Victoria where he married in 1914 and the one born Lancashire stayed in England. ??? That death you found could be the one who didn't leave Lancashire and therefore not mine.
Both married after 1911 so what's in the 1911 census? (I can look).
Any sign of one or both of them in shipping records to Australia 1901 - 1914?

Dave

Hi Dave
Only one W J CATHERWOOD departing Liverpool in 1914 and arriving in Victoria. (ref post 46).
So the William J CATHERWOOD who was born 1890 died in 1967 (can I say this chap never left England)?
Refer post 44 what happened to William J CATHERWOOD c1886 Engineer who left Sydney in 1913 for London. His wife Helen died onboard. Did he stay in the UK or return to Australia.????

Hello crankypants,
Thanks. I would say the 1907 one to Brisbane would be mine. Born 1884 or 1886 is +/- 1 year of Helen's age. Marriage in Brisbane in 1912. Yes, what happened to him after Helen died?
The one who left Liverpool in 1914 with spouse must have arrived in Victoria before their 1914 marriage. I still say it must have been a honeymoon. :D He enlisted in 1915 POB Belfast, Ireland. Service record has him in Scofields, NSW and thence we have his death.
Only birth in England for a 'William' from 1883 to 1891:
Births Mar 1891
Catherwood William John Liverpool 8b 37
1911 Census Index
MILITARY CATHERWOOD WILLIAM J 1891 20 Medway Kent
So, was mine born in Scotland 1885 +/- 1 year ?
No sign of a William CATHERWOOD born in Scotland 1883 to 1891 on SP.

Dave

Hello crankypants,
Thanks. It's a very Scottish, Irish sort of name. I bet the Lancashire ones were not originally English.
Marriages Dec 1888
CATHERWOOD William John Liverpool 8b 171
I would say he is the father of those including William J born in Lancashire. This is probably the marriage of his son.
Marriages Sep 1924
Catherwood William J Coward Liverpool 8b 223
Only the one birth in England (the one who didn't leave England) and no birth in Scotland, so does that mean mine was also born in Ireland?
1901 Irish census ???

Dave

Hello,
My name is Heather Catherwood. I live in Brockport, NY USA. I am starting to do research on my family, and I came across this website. Your above post from the 1901 Census is my great grandfather William Catherwood. His Parents were Robert Catherwood and Dorcas Donnan. I have information about part of the family that immigrated to the United States in the 1920s, I can send you any information you would need to find out more about the Catherwood/Donnan family. I would appreciate any information you have on this family as well; as this is as far back as I have information. My direct email address is [email] (Sorry Heather, your email address has been deleted for security reasons. Once you have made three posts, you will be able to send your address by private message. dave) Thank you in advance for your assistance.
