Hello crankypants,

On 17 September 1801 John PALMER snr's sister Sophia had married Robert CAMPBELL.

CAMPBELL, ROBERT (1769-1846), merchant, pastoralist, politician and philanthropist, was born on 28 April 1769 at Greenock, Scotland, the youngest surviving son of ten children of John Campbell, laird of Ashfield and writer and town clerk of Greenock, and his wife Agnes, née Paterson.

Sophia Susannah named after John's daughter who married:

CLOSE, EDWARD CHARLES (1790-1866), settler and churchman, was born on 12 March 1790 at Rangamati, Bengal, the only child of Edward Close, merchant, and Marrianne, daughter of Michael Collinson. Educated in England, he entered the army in 1808, serving throughout the Peninsular war as a lieutenant in the 48th Regiment. On 3 August 1817 he arrived in New South Wales with a detachment of his regiment in the Matilda and after several years in Sydney was transferred to Newcastle. As acting engineer he was responsible in 1821-22 for putting down mooring chains and removing dangerous shoals from Newcastle Harbour. He built a fort near the signal station and erected an iron beacon in which a large coal fire was lit each night at sunset. This light on Beacon Hill functioned until 1857, when it was replaced by the Nobby's Head light-house.

On 27 September 1821 at St John's, Parramatta, Close married Sophia Susannah, only daughter of John Palmer and his wife Susan.

Hello crankypants,

Thanks. Interesting how people die in ACT in 1855 when it was not formed until 1911. eek)

Spend a fascinating time in this graveyard and discover the early history of the Anglican and Methodist community of 18th [ ]Century Queanbeyan. The old headstone section of the cemetery opened in 1885. The oldest standing monument is that of Pemberton Campbell Palmer who died on 15 August 1885. Pemberton Palmer was the grandson of John Palmer, the purser on Governor Phillip's Flagship of the First Fleet.

John Palmer, who was the brother-in-law of Robert Campbell established a holding near the new settlement that was later called Queanbeyan. He called his holding Jerrabomberra. The area surrounding the Queanbeyan district was called the Limestone Plains and as a free settler and merchant, Robert Campbell set up a farming property called Duntroon.

Hi Dave

So who told you it was me.:D :D

Can't believe I'm going to tell you this.
A while ago I was having problems receiving emails (well so I thought). Rang my internet provider and had him working on it for over an hour. Well eventually he solved it and there were all my emails I had been waiting on.
Told him he was a star and thanked him for being so patient etc.
So once I hung up the phone I realised my boo boo, my missing emails were on page 2. All I had to do was click on the arrow to go to next page.redf) redf)

Hi Dave

I have been catching up on some of the posts including yours, and noticed an Acland mentioned.

There is a well known family of Aclands of Killerton House near Exeter. If this is of any consequence let me know, as there would be plenty of records available.

Hello daveham9,
I've noticed these comments here to someone called crankypants? re my Palmer family .My father was Keith Athol Paterson Palmer born to John and Evangeline Palmer in 1909.He was a twin, his twin sister Mary died at birth and is buried in a wooden butterbox at Rookwood cemetry.
Dad was part of a large-ish family ,about 9 children? if I recall?
My mother was Alice Daisy Notley born in 1913.
Who is crankypants and is he/she a Palmer family member?
I have the more or less complete Palmer family history here ,done by my teacher friend and also my cousin Ian's wife Lefayre Palmer who lives in Miranda ,Sydney.

I'm curious to read in one of your comments that dad[Keith] was motor mechanic...never knew that,he did work in State Parliament House till he retired in about the 1970's ?
I'd love to find out more about crankypants and where he/she fits in?
Waiting to hear,
Louise Piazza [nee Palmer]
