Hello crankypants,

It's time for another look at the ROWE family. There are lots of gaps and many won't be easy to fill. I hope 1841 & 1851 census records can help a bit. Lots of the children have extracted baptism records in IGI so that's handy. There are some possible deaths in FreeBMD.

George (Alexander) ROWE b. abt 1752 d. Jul 1811 Portsea - Surgeon in RN

married ? Bef 1783 ? ###

Catherine/Katherina ?? ###

Children:

i. Mary Ann ROWE b. ?? d. ?? *** may not be the first born

There are 7 deaths between 1850 & 1861 in Portsea for Mary Ann CARTER

married ? abt 1818 ? [No sign at St Mary's Portsea]

Henry CARTER b. abt 1782 Portsea d. ?? - A Doctor (in RN ??)

They had 8 children (all in IGI) but I'll list only the first two here:

William Henry b. 27 Aug 1818 c. 20 Sep 1818 Orange Street Now King Street-Independent, Portsea
George Henry b. 25 Sep 1820 c. 15 Oct 1820 Orange Street Now King Street-Independent, Portsea

The others were all baptised at St John's Portsea.

===========
ii. Catherina ROWE b. 1783 Portsea ### named after her mother probably

Please see what you can find. Thanks.

Dave

Hello crankypants,

Thank you very much.

So Maria Katherine married DAVIS :) George 28 Aug 1843 Saint Mary's Portsea, Hampshire, England

I searched for deaths for the other daughters including middle name, eg Elizabeth Louisa, then tried to find a matching marriage without the middle name. No luck so far in all of Hampshire, not just Portsea.

It's not London, Surrey as per census and both names are very common so it may not be the correct one.

Thank you very much.

If you can please check Pallot's for the marriage around 1816 of Henry CARTER and Mary Ann ROWE. Thanks. It may not be in IGI or Pallot's because it may have been in a N-C chapel. A couple of the children were baptised in a non-conformist church - Orange Street Independent.

They are ALL mine :D :D but I don't know where she fits in.

The newspaper article on Stephen says at the bottom "The unfortunate officer was a native of St. Kitt's, and without a relative in this country."

Stephen lost his fortune when he lost a court case in which he claimed part of the 'prize' from the capture of a foreign vessel.

Huguenot descent from La Rochelle in France.
Joined Royal Navy on 12 Aug 1780 as Captain's servant on HMS 'Venus' in WI Squadron of Admiral Sir George Brydges Rodney (a family friend). Served on HMS 'Boreas' and then HMS 'Endymion'.
Later on 2 May 1785 was Horatio Nelson's servant during one tour of duty Nelson had in the West Indies on HMS 'Boreas'.

In "The Commissioned Sea Officers of the Royal Navy 1660 to 1815" Vol 3:
Perdrieau, Stephen - L 20th Dec 1796 [L= Lieutenant]

1801 HMS 'Alkmar'
1802 HMS 'Dreadnought'
30 Sep 1803 HMS 'Pylades'
16 Dec 1804 HMS 'Scout'
8 Mar 1805 HMS 'Royal William'

Sherborne and Yeovil Mercury 1806
1806 29Sep Perdrain Lieut Stephen - commander HM gun brig 'Hardy'

London Gazette issue 16121 of 20 February 1808 [pages 5&6] contains a short dispatch from Lieutenant Steph. Perdrieau, commanding His Majesty’s Gun-Brig Hardy, reporting the capture of La Revios, a French Lugger Privateer, off Little Hampton, February 19, 1808

HARDY (14) Built in 1804, Wearmouth
Storeship in 1818. Hospital ship in 1821. Sold in 1835.
* 1808 Lieut. Stephen PERDRIEAU, Channel
On the morning of 19 February, fifteen miles west of Beachy Head, he discovered a lugger close in shore and chased after her. A revenue cutter came up astern of HARDY and, with her superior sailing, overtook and reached the enemy first. She was the REVOIS (16), Capt. Friesmanton, with 48 men, and had left Dieppe the day before.
* 1808 Lieut. DUTTON, Plymouth.

In 1817 relinquished command of HMS 'Waldemar' and was appointed to HM Semaphore Station West Square, St Georges Southwark .

The Age of Nelson web site only records one entry by name: PERDRIEAU, Lieutenant Stephen (d. 1820) and another mention under the ship Hardy as above; he didn’t serve at Trafalgar.

Hello crankypants,

Thank you very much. Well, no doubt it is Catherine in Pembroke. I have no information that she married so it's curious it has her maiden name and 'widow'. Well, I guess then she didn't marry but did have a daughter.

Deaths Mar 1907

Hello crankypants,

I looked for a death for Charlotte PRICE and, well, way too many. I'm not finding much to fill the remaining gaps.

Hello crankypants,

Thank you very much. It looks like 'Jaly' but more like July than Jan. I noticed the image says Surrey but is Lambeth in Surrey or Middlesex?

Hello crankypants,

Thanks. I'm getting nowhere now. Nothing more is turning up. eek)
I can't find anything on Joseph Packwood. He became a ships captain and may have visited Australia in 1833 some four years before Henry Carter did. I don't think Joseph lived in India like his brother George Augustus.

Please let me know when you think we can move on to the Australian branch and I'll start a new topic.

Dave

Hi Dave

Like you I've had no luck finding anything on Joseph Packwood Perdriau. We'll keep him as a 'work in progress'
Can't find that Indian site 'again':o :o

What about the ROWE family, do we need to look at anything else here.

Ok to start a new Aussie thread, If I find anything else I'll come back here.

Hello crankypants,

http://www.fibis.org/

Marriage Year 1881 - 1885
Husband First Names William
Husband Surname Perdrian
Wife First Names Magdalene
Wife Surname Gardner

Is William a second son of George Augustus? No one seems to know. Is this the same person as Albert William born in Australia in 1864 - son of Henry Carter P?

"There was a son James Augustus, who was apparently an officer in the Indian Subordinate Medical Service. He died 1912 (or at least his will was made that year) or in 1917. His wife was a Mary Josephine nee MALLON, who died 1930. They had lived at No. 37 The Cantonment, Lucknow."

"Albert and Margaret had two children, Susan born in Jhansi 1886 and a son Donald , who died quite young. Margaret died at childbirth and Albert went back to Australia after a couple of years without Susan. Susan was then looked after by some of her relations from her Mother's side, a Chief Justice of the High Court."

It's a puzzle I've not been able to solve. Did Albert William go to India, marry, have two children, and then return to Australia to marry again in 1896?

Dave

Hello crankypants,

Ok, I give up. I have Googled 'Chief Justice Gardner of India' and all sorts of other strings and I can't find anyone named Gardner who was Chief Justice.

If the dates are correct George A married in 1856 and his son James A in 1866. Can't find a birth date for James A.

Dave

Hello crankypants,

This does not help much but I found this note:

'Christian and her husband moved to Plymouth since a John Merrifield is listed as an agent there for the disposal of the stores etc of the captured Prussian brig, Minerva. Lieutenant Perdrian was the commander of the brig, Hardy, that captured the Minerva.'

Hi Dave

I can't find any newspaper articles on John MERRIFIELD.

One tree has John's death between 1806-1817.
Another tree has John married 1806 John died 1806, wife Christian born 1813
:2fun: :2fun: :2fun: :2fun:

Tonight I'll search the cd's "The Deanery of the Three Towns" & "The Deanery of Woodleigh" and see if anything comes up.

Thanks. I can't find that article about the court case Stephen lost. I don't know if it related to the 'Minerva' or not.

Hello crankypants,

Thanks. That must be the source of the information that the MERRIFIELDs moved to Plymouth. I was hoping you'd be able to find the reference to the court case in which Stephen claimed part of the prize.

Hello crankypants,

Thank you very much. I don't know if George ROWE snr, had a son George or a son A. They are not in my tree and they may or may not be part of that family.

Mon Dec 14 1801 - Thurs f'night before = 3 Dec 1801 which is correct for marriage to Joseph SEYMOUR. I just love finding marriage dates from old newspaper entries :D

Miss 'M A Rowe" has to be Mary Ann so it seems she married Thomas CLIVERTON in Kingston in Jan 1806. Her first child with Henry CARTER was born about 1817. So perhaps we can't find her marriage in London area because it's not under ROWE ??

Dave

Hi Dave

Yes it looks like she married twice. No CLIVERTON/CARTER marriage in London archives.
Think just a coincidence another ROWE marriage on same page. Then again it could be George's nephew a surgeon. Do you have any of George ROWE's siblings.

Hello crankypants,

Thanks for looking. It's possible since children were baptised in N-C chapel that they may have married in one too.

This is all I have on George ROWE snr:

George - middle name possibly Alexander
Possible baptism
c. 24 Oct 1752 Houghton, Hampshire, England
Joseph & Sarah DIXON
Private IGI

Surgeon in RN

George Rowe buried 30 Jul 1811 Portsea

I don't have any of his siblings or the date of his marriage or the name of his spouse other than it's a variation of Catherine. This is probably her burial - birth date around 1750 would be about right.

Katharina Rowe bu 2 Jun 1829 aged 80 Portsea.

Regards,

Dave
