Hello crankypants,

Paul Clymer STOTT (’41) was born at Hawthorn on 23 March 1923, the son of a Commercial Traveller, and attended Scotch in 1938. He served in the AIF from 1941–46 and was a Lance Corporal in the NGF Headquarters. Paul followed his father Eric (1910–?; died 13 June 1970) to Scotch.

No death in South Australia to 1972 so if Eric did die on 13 Jun 1970 it was probably in Victoria.

Dave

Hi Dave

Have you any other information on Joseph SMITH, some idea where they lived before 1898. Lots of J. SMITH & Joseph SMITH on Sands Directory, too hard to know which is yours.

As Joseph may of died around 1898, will focus on Martha Jane.

So far have checked the Dalley Division 1903 E/R for Martha Jane and her daughter Annie Prest because Annie's husband is living in Leichhardt. They are not in this division.

Checked Parkes Division for Martha as she died in Petersham, still no luck.

Hello crankypants,

Thanks for looking. Sorry, I have no other info. I have Joseph's death from a source but can't confirm the reg:

356/1898 SMITH JOSEPH JAMES MARGARET SYDNEY ?
8101/1898 SMITH JOSEPH THOMAS MARY SYDNEY ?

However neither of those may be the one because of this likely marriage:

Marriages Dec 1847
Prest Ann Malton 24 495
SMITH William Malton 24 495

The information that Joseph was born in 1853 in Bradford could be wrong so his date of death of 3 Aug 1898 could be wrong as well. Just one of many puzzles in my tree. :D

Hello crankypants,

William Adam SYME b. ? d.?

1930 Warringah

married 1918 Hornsby

Hazel PERDRIAU b. 1889 Balmain d. ?

Hazel must have gone to England with siblings Adele and Gwynne because I believe she met her future spouse there:

Hello crankypants,

I put a fishing exercise in the 1861 census for Joseph SMITH even though I know the name is rather common. I'm following the PREST name to see if it yields something.

Marriages Dec 1847
Prest Ann Malton 24 495
SMITH William Malton 24 495

:2fun: I just found another spanner or two!!

Death # 7168/1927 SMITH MARTHA J EDMUND ANN PETERSHAM

Marriages Jun 1844
Hodgson Edmund Skipton 23 541
Prest Ann Skipton 23 541
Tomlinson John Skipton 23 541
Tomlinson Susanna Skipton 23 541

So, did Ann marry Edmund and the PREST came from Annie's mother's side not her father's side? If so, then that marriage in Malton is a red herring and one of the two 1898 death reg must be correct for Joseph.

Hello crankypants,

Thank you very much. Oh, I didn't realise the UK Death Index went that far. :D Now I'll have some more UK death queries for you. Can you see Hazel's death there? I can't see it in Ryerson.

I can't see William's birth in 1889 in the Index so I wonder if he was born in Scotland or...?

Now, I wonder if Hazel travelled to England and they met there or if William travelled to Australia and they met here?

Also, the 4th sibling Elma PERDRIAU is in Warringah ER 1930 and 1936.

Hello crankypants,

I hope you are good at reading alien scripts :2fun:

I don't know if they had any children. Hazel is in the ER in 1930 in Warringah but I don't know where she died or if they
separated. Two possibilities I guess. William came to Australia and they married and he went back to England and Hazel never left Sydney. Or Hazel was in England like her sisters and met William there, then they married in Australia and then they both went back to England.

Thanks. So Frank Osborne SECOMB was not a minister. I guess he is not related then.

Hello crankypants,

Thank you very much. Yes, it looks like a 2nd marriage for John. That's one the STORRIER researchers missed.

Hello crankypants,

Thank you very much. I'm not sure about the Crows Nest one. I'm not sure if that would be in Chatswood or North Sydney RD. Her death was registered in Chatswood so she may have continued to live in Mowbray Rd. I know of no other daughters or siblings-in-law. Her spouse James Sydney had two siblings, Henry who died in 1900 and Lilian who died in 1919.

Any sign of James Sydney in Sands Directory? I can't find a marriage or a death for Phyllis or Keith. A Phyllis with no middle name in Dalley in 1930 and West Sydney in 1936.

Hello crankypants,

Thank you very much.

I'm not sure. I can't find any note explaining why I chose that death reg for William.

marriage
1876/B5446 Sexton William Brigg Florence Susannah
1891/C1581 Sexton William Charles Craig Lydia Isabel

So, we can rule out William Charles.

If we assume I have the wrong death reg then William remarried and in the ER we have Amy a daughter from his first marriage, Edward a son from his 2nd and his 2nd spouse Florence.

I'd say that's too much of a coincidence of names.

I'd say this is the correct one:

Have you heard of he Abbott Index for BDM in South Australia? I have some events in Adelaide from 1840-1850 that can't be found in that index or in the fiche. Are there events listed in parish records that have not found their way to Abbotts or the fiche?

Hi Dave

Thought this might be of interest.

There is an article in Aldine History Queensland for a Joseph Hughes and towards the end of his bio it reads.

In 1866 Mr. Hughes married the second daughter of the late Captain Richard Sexton, who arrived a pioneer of the colony in the “Fortitude” and has three sons and six daughters.

Looking at that census listing it looks like a miniature version of my ancestry  it's just missing the 1/4 German.

Hi Dave

Not having any luck. So far have searched these divisions.
Wentworth
South Sydney
East Sydney
West Sydney
Dalley

Anything remotely close was this one, really there is no way to prove it's them.
1903 Dalley - Leichhardt
HALL Henry John, 6 Seale-street, coach painter
HALL Mary Ann, 6 Seale-street, domestic duties

I was hoping any children born 1880-1890 could give some more detail if they had moved from the Sydney area, but that hasn't proven nothing.

Should we track Mary's other siblings to see if pattern of families in the same location??

Hello crankypants,

Thanks for looking. The name may be HALL after all it's 50/50 since we have one reg with HALL and one with HALLS. No one has Henry's birth or death or parents. So it may be that one.

Hello crankypants,

Thanks for looking. I can't find anything that will help clear up the HALL(S) question.

I'm having problems now with Susan DAVEY's father's death. One researcher has two dates for the marriage:

Parents marriage
23 Aug 1824 Lyncombe & Widcomb, Somerset
16 Aug 1824 Taunton, Somerset

William Thomas DAVEY & Elizabeth GARRETT.

Elizabeth died on 16 Jul 1878 Bombala and was buried on 19 Jul 1878 in Delegate.

4689/1878 DAVEY ELIZABETH SAMUEL DIED BOMBALA BOMBALA

The Monaro Pioneers site says William died 1897 (father = Richard - mother unknown) but I can't see a death that fits with DAVEY/ DAVY - William or Thomas.

Susan's brother John was born 1839 Bath, Somerset and the next one James was born in 1845 in NSW. I can't see the family in shipping records. A possible reason is that they went to NZ from England??

Immigration: 13/10/1841 ENG to NZ on the 'Birman' arriving NZ 1/3/1842 ?

That boat must had had oars :2fun: from the journey duration.

Addition:

Well now. They are on the passenger list for the 'Birman':

Being submitted information you do have to question it's reliability.

An online tree has Susan DAVEY who married Joseph Silva, b.1832 Bath and died 17.11.1888 Sommerset, England.

Hello crankypants,

Thanks for looking. I found that one too but do you know where Hillgrove is? With lots of the family on the south coast area near Bombala I doubt he died in the northern NSW near Armidale.

I know, I saw John listed as having been born in Victoria. Perhaps he was and registered in NSW??

I don't know where Susan's dob 28 May 1832 came from. It's not in FreeBMD or IGI and there are no OPC for any of the Bath parishes.

Please see if you can find Jane Sands SILVA burial record for 1955 in South Head Cemetery. Thanks. I have Joseph's and Susan's already.

Yes thanks, I have the details of Joseph and Susan's burial at South Head Cemetery. Curious. The family tree I was given recently, hence the return to SILVA, says:

"Jane died on 23 Feb 1955 in 100 Spit Road, Mosman. She was buried on 25 Feb 1955 in South Head Cemetery."

Jane's spouse is there:

Hello crankypants,

Thank you very much. I'm puzzled because the index says Joseph John but the details have John Joseph

Something is wrong here:

Birth Reg# 15195/1897 SILVIA NORMAN F WILLIAM J JANE S PADDINGTON

Death Reg# 16980/1963 SILVA NORMAN FONTES WILLIAM JOSEPH ELIZABETH JANE RYDE ?

NAA
Norman Fontes SILVA b. 1897 Paddington - Occupation Dentist
(next of kin uncle William James SILVA) of Parsley rd, Parsley Bay, via Watson's Bay.

If the dentist is the one who died in 1963 then he can't be the one born in 1897 because the parents don't match and the relationship would be father not uncle.

The middle name for the father in the birth reg is James not Joseph.

And, yes some SILVA do appear in BDM as SILVIA. :D William's birth and death reg have SILVA but marriage and birth reg of 5 children have SILVIA.

Another son William Archibald Gladstone is in 1930 but can't be found in 1936:

1930 N.S.W Electoral Roll – Parramatta – Hornsby
SILVIA Irene Catherine, Peat’s Ferry road, Brooklyn, home duties
SILVIA William Gladstone, Peat’s Ferry road, Brooklyn, mental attnd.

Hi Dave

SORRY MISTAKE or is it MISTAKE SORRY. HAVING FINGER PROBLEMS or is it PROBLEM HAVING FINGERS.
Yes should be JOSEPH JOHN not JOHN JOSEPH.

These SILVA's are driving me nuts.:D

I'm thinking there is only one Norman Fontes SILVA and probably a mistake on the death certificate.
Most death certificates I have has the son-in-law as the informant and they tend to put down the wrong information.
So then if he died in 1963 why can't I find him in 1930 & 1936 E/R's.
Checked 1912 & 1920 REGISTER OF DENTISTS N.S.W Government Gazettes there are no SILVA’s. Actually he's a bit young to be a dentist.

Still no luck finding William Archibald Gladstone SILVA in 1936 E/R.

Hello crankypants,

Ah, thanks. I like to blame the new black keyboards. :D

I guess you are right about the death certificate. It gives his address as Parsley Rd so I guess that makes William & Jane his parents:

Jane Sands Silva, 4 Parsley road, Home duties
William James Silva, Parsley Bay road, Master mariner

Now, this one is not in my tree so he must be related to Matthew, also not in my tree.

Francis John Silva, 1 Cove street, WATSON'S BAY, Clerk

1864
Mathew Silva, a Portuguese immigrant, is operating what is believed to be the first grocery store in Watsons Bay at his house at 1 Cove Street.

There are two or three SILVA brothers and one sister also in Watsons Bay who are not in my tree (yet). I don't know how they are related to the Joseph who married Susan DAVEY. Joseph died in 1891 and Emanuel the probable father of the 3 sons and one daughter died in 1902:

16223/1902 SILVA EMANUEL VAUCLUSE

There is nothing on this death certificate to indicate any connection to Joseph.

-----------
John Ephraim's spouse

Birth Reg# 2891/1869 ROLSTON EMILY L G JAMES MARY A BALMAIN ?

Death Reg# 22738/1956 SILVA EMILY LOUISA JOSEPH EMILY RYDE [parents ?]

It looks like an error on the death certificate again. The name and date and place fit as does the marriage of those listed in the birth reg. I have them in 1930 and 1936 in Gladesville.

Hello crankypants,

Source AWM145 Roll of Honour cards, 1914-1918 War, Army

I don't know if it is coincidence his parents are Joseph & Catherine or not.

The Joseph and Catherine in my tree have Leslie born 22 May 1892 and then Alfred 11 Oct 1901. There certainly is a gap for one to have been born in 1894. Leslie enlisted in WWI and Alfred in WWII so it would fit but Victoria is a bit of a mystery. I can't see a birth in NSW BDM so please see if you can find Vincent's birth about 1894 in Victoria.

Admission of failure to look at all sources:

I've just checked his service record on NAA and Vincent's parents died when he was about two. !!!!

The Lone Pine Memorial, situated in the Lone Pine Cemetery at Anzac, is the main Australian Memorial on Gallipoli, and one of four memorials to men of the New Zealand Expeditionary Force. Designed by Sir John Burnet, the principal architect of the Gallipoli cemeteries, it is a thick tapering pylon 14.3 metres high on a square base 12.98 metres wide. It is constructed from limestone mined at Ilgardere in Turkey.

The Memorial commemorates the 3268 Australians and 456 New Zealanders who have no known grave and the 960 Australians and 252 New Zealanders who were buried at sea after evacuation through wounds or disease. The names of New Zealanders commemorated are inscribed on stone panels mounted on the south and north sides of the pylon, while those of the Australians are listed on a long wall of panels in front of the pylon and to either side. Names are arranged by unit and rank.

The Memorial stands over the centre of the Turkish trenches and tunnels which were the scene of heavy fighting during the August offensive. Most cemeteries on Gallipoli contain relatively few marked graves, and the majority of Australians killed on Gallipoli are commemorated here.
