Hello,
I'm looking for the birth of Maria / Mary Grant GOLDING born abt 1829 in England.
She married Thomas SLAUGHTER in 1867 in Queensland:
1867/C0139 Golding Mary Grant - Slaughter Thomas
and she died in 1884:
1884/C4534 Slaughter Maria - - Grant ** born England aged 55 years
Age at death may or may not be accurate. So all I have is father's name GOLDING and mother's name GRANT.
Toowong Cemetery
Slaughter Thomas M 26 / 11 / 1887 88 years
Slaughter Maria F 18 / 09 / 1884 Unknown
I have two that say Maria and one that says Mary.
Thomas was from Charing, Kent and possibly Maria is also from Kent or a nearby county I'd guess.
Regards,
Dave

Hi Glen,
Thanks. I'm guessing it was Kent or nearby. More likely than Yorkshire or Scotland. I've searched IGI using lots of common given names and Hugh Wallis' Middle Name Index, and FreeREG and "google" and everything I can think of without luck so far.
I don't even know if Maria arrived in Australia alone or with family.

Dave

Hello crankypants,
I deliberately left that one for you! :2fun:
Thanks very much. I did do Sussex in Hugh Wallis' site.
Interesting that the marriage reg has Grant GOLDING and the death reg has GRANT as her mother's name.
I have been back to the Middle Name Index for Sussex with GOLDING and GOULDING as a middle name and found nothing.
Now the question is - was she born mary/maria GRANT and married a GOLDING/GOULDING before she married Thomas?
If the year of birth around 1829 is accurate then she is not the Mary Ann GRANT who married Robert GOULDING in 1843!!

Dave

Hi Dave
Yes I think her age may be out a bit and yes I wondered too if Maria was previously married.
I searched 1851/1861 census, 1841 is too mind boggling for any serious searching on a Saturday morning.
1851 U.K census
Civil Parish: Hastings St Mary Magdalen
County: Sussex
GRANT Maria servant 1822 age 29 Hastings, Sussex
1861 U.K census
Civil Parish: Great Yarmouth St Nicholas
County: Norfolk
GRANT Maria Companion 1822 age 39 Hastings, Sussex
This is the closest match I could find under GRANT. I couldn't see this Maria in the 1871 census. I also did a search for all Maria Grants born in Sussex and this is the only one listed.
I found one married in 1851, Maria GOLDING b. abt 1821 Hastings (not yours as she is listed on the 1871 census).
Now to find her coming into Australiaeek)
cheers

:D :D
Lots of Mary GRANTS and 2 Mary GOLDINGs to NSW.
I've searched for GRANT & GOLDING marriages in NSW & Qld.
Her death reg seems to say she was born GRANT but was Grant GOLDING when she married Thomas.
What next

Dave
